W. Ray Sagner, CFP®

Certified Financial Planner, CFP®

After graduating from Boise State University, Ray spent a year working as the Fitness Coordinator on an Air Force base in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. After returning from Saudi, he was awarded a teaching assistantship for the Master’s program in Health Education at the University of Idaho, graduating in 1990. After traveling and living in New York, New York and then Upper Michigan, Ray had an opportunity to move back to Oregon to purchase and manage a small business in Salem, close to his family. It was during that time, putting in long hours running a business, that his interest in comprehensive financial planning and investments became more intense. He took course work in Financial Planning, and in 2000 became a Certified Financial Planner™ professional.

Ray has been in practice for over twenty years now, having joined The Legacy Group in 2004 from Morgan Stanley where he worked as a financial advisor. Prior to his position with Morgan Stanley, Ray was with US Bank/US Bancorp Investments in Salem, where he served as an Investment Representative. In 2008, he took over the day to day operations of The Legacy Group and gained ownership in 2012.

Professional and community engagement has been and continues to be extremely important to Ray and the firm. He has served as the Co-Chair for Leadership Salem at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, President of the Rotary Club of South Salem, and President of Smith Fine Arts Series at Western Oregon University, and founding board member and past president of the Salem Fire Foundation. He is also a member in good standing with the Willamette Valley Estate Planning Council, The Financial Planning Association (FPA), and The Financial Planning Association of Oregon and Southwest Washington. He also wrote a monthly column for the Salem Business Journal for over 16 years.

Ray’s favorite aspect of his work is helping his clients become financially organized and helping them understand the importance of seeing how it all fits together. In his time away from the office, he enjoys working out, biking, hiking, golf, cooking and reading. Like all really well rounded people.
